HISTORY OF SWDLGA CHAMPIONSHIP
The SWDGA Championship was first played for in 1933 over 18 Holes‑
this continued until 1991 when it was altered to a 36 Hole Event
played on one day. In 2003 changed again to a 27 hole event
(The original Cup is still in use)
The first Champion Shirley Tolhurst won the Victorian Championship
in 1934.
Until 1959 if a tie occurred, both names were engraved on the Cup,
but from 1960 a play off (sudden death) took place.
AUDREY MCKENZIE SALVER
The Audrey McKenzie Salver, presented to the winner of the 36 holes
nett event at the SWD District Championship, was inaugurated at the
Annual General Meeting of the Association in 1999, in gratitude for
the many years of sterling service to the South Western District
given by Audrey McKenzie, a member of the Torquay Golf Club since
1958, who first joined the District Committee as Delegate from
Torquay in 1973. In 1977, Audrey became President of what was then
known as the South Western District Golf Association, a year which
saw the number of clubs grow from ten to twelve with the inclusion
of Clifton Springs and Queens Park.
From 1985 to 1999 Audrey gave the District continuous service as
District Treasurer. In this role she oversaw the finances of the
Association, keeping every aspect, from the expenses of the Country
Team to the raffle-money from District fund-raising under firm
control.
Audrey has also served as Lady Captain and President of her own
club, and in 1995 was made a Life Member.
The Committee of South Western felt that this Salver was a fitting
recognition of Audrey's outstanding contribution,
