HISTORY of BETTY KERNOT SCRATCH FOURSOMES EVENT
In 1971 Miss Kernot suggested this event and conditions were set down by
her.
Originally the Handicap limit was: Combined lowest 20‑ No Highest
but as competition improved limits were amended to: Combined lowest 20‑
highest 45.
The Executive at that time, to her embarrassment, chose to name the
event in her honour.
Miss Kernot was originally a Geelong delegate to the SWDGA and became
President of the SWDGA in 1962
After her valuable contribution to the SWDGA in previous years the
Committee saw fit in 1963 to appoint Miss Kernot PATRON, a position she
held with great pride until she passed away in 1984.
Miss Kernot was a member of the VLGU Council; Australian Champion twice;
captained several Victorian teams; holder of a VLGU Laurel Wreath
Brooch; won SWDGA Championship six times; holder of several Royal
Melbourne, Geelong and Barwon Heads Championships. She began and
organised the first SWDGA Junior Clinic in 1963, which she held each
school holidays for 13 years until 1976 when they lapsed through lack of
girls available.
