The South Western District Golf Association was founded by René Austin in 1933.  The primary purpose of the formation was to introduce Shield matches.
Senior and Junior divisions were established with senior 0- 18 and junior 19- 36 handicaps. 
Apart from the Association being disbanded during the war- shield matches or PENNANT as matches are now called has continued. 
There have been a number of changes over the years to reach the present arrangement of 7 Divisions with promotion and relegation between divisions. 
Sunday pennant was introduced in 1987- specifically for working Women, Full time students and juniors. 
In 2003 there were 12 teams playing in two sections with a final to decide the pennant winner. 2006- 10 teams - reverted to 1 division
