Skirting the Fairways

As we head for the Westgate Bridge and beyond……….. Well, 2009 Country Teams Matches, we boarded the bus at Kardinia Park, all riders on time and excited at the day ahead, sun shining, corks popping and chook devoured Its all good, so far Our intrepid driver Lou Fatone, you’re a very lucky girl Rhonda, we all want to adopt him, he’s a doll, gently guided our, how would you say senior bus, down the freeway it seems that the fun started very early in the trip because our entertainment officer, Chris Barr, quickly handed out the trivia, in between chicken and champagne serves, soon followed by the Calcutta, where knowing personal things about the players came very much in handy A few practice runs through of the new team song and some raffles, many generously donated by Margot Parton, (big thanks to all raffle donators, including Matt Milne Port Pro) and we were counting the speed bumps into the Cranbourne Golf course We were there, excited at seeing our girls in action against the top players of the state. And that also means that our team are among the top players in the state, but we knew that already and they did not let us down. Proud or what, they played magnificently, more so when, as they strode up the 9th fairway toward their adoring fans, waiting to cheer their every stroke The team visually lifted as they approached us, and we were many this year, all there to support our fabulous team. The morning games were wonderful to witness and we took the draw to a 6/1 win and weren’t we happy It seems that the girls were called to resume their golf very soon after finishing the morning round, but out they went again, one by one to continue their assault. We looked up at the darkening sky which circled above and as we expected, it was not ideal playing conditions. We would have NCR’d, but no, players and caddies, brollies up continued to do battle, not only with their opponents but the elements as well. We were struggling to stay dry and warm as spectators, but on and on they went and pulled a credible squared match The golf from all players (opposition included) was wonderful, from the young girls to the old campaigners and the teamwork between players and caddies great to watch. Congratulations to Adele who was unbeaten on the day and unbeaten for the tournament Our girls were thoroughly exhausted after 36 gruelling holes, but still managed to make a fuss of the supporters. We hear that the team loves having the bus parked in the carpark, almost as much as we love coming to support the team Every player and caddie came to the bus to wave goodbye and hear a rousing rendition of the team theme song, inspected the senior bus, streamers and bunting all over it, and then sang the theme song back to us The busees and the whole district could not be more proud of the Captain, Gael, the team and the caddies. To finish runners-up in the first year back in Division 1 is nothing short of sensational. 2010, can we wait till next year to do it all again, we will have to I guess, but if you want to witness what is a great golfing spectacle, keep you eyes peeled for the magic bus advert, and get on board, because the team needs to see its district ladies and the district ladies need to support this wonderful team of players Chris Barr – Entertainment Officer Sue Hazell –

click to enlarge Thanks to Chris Barr, Sue Hazell, Marilyn Mooney and Bev Wheeler....web It has been an honour to represent our great district in the recent country teams event. These 3 days of golf are the highlight of my year. Thank you to our district committee for their on going support which is so very much appreciated by all team members. Thank you to Gael Charman for her encouragement and support. Gael made sure she caught up with all her team members during their various matches and gave us up to date scores which is so important. My biggest thank you goes to the fabulous supporters who braved the disgusting weather and arrived en masse to support the team. It is such a moral booster to see so many familiar faces cheering us on. They all have a word of encouragement for us as we pass by and make us so proud to be wearing the district uniform. The song they performed before heading home brought tears of gratitude to a few eyes. I consider these lovely ladies as much part of our team as the players and caddies. I was so intent on getting the email written that I totally forgot to thank Joye and John Burton who spent three nights in Melb. and trekked around every single hole supporting the entire team. A more dedicated pair of supporters would be hard to find. Thank you both for making the trip. It was such a hoot to see you arrive unexpectedly on Mon. morning. I look forward to next year when we hopefully get to do it all over again. Look out North Eastern...We are back and we are hungry. Lets keep our district the envy of all other districts. Micha Evans
